13 Favourite Christmas Movies | Blogmas 2017

It's December 13th, so here's is a little list of my 13 favourite Christmas movies. The movie line-up has changed a few times since I had the idea to write this post, I'm still not 100% on the order of the films in the middle, but I think this is the best order of the line-up so far. There may be a couple of your favourite films missing from this list, and if so let me know in the comments what you'd change about this list. The list starts at the least favourite, to My All Time Favourite Christmas film, can you guess what it is before I tell you?

13. Snow Dogs (2002)
This film is in the last place, not because I like it the least, but because it's not actually a Christmas film just a film I like to watch around Christmas and in the colder months. Any Dog owner/lover will probably love this hilarious family comedy about a man whose life changes after he's left a set of sledding dogs in a will. The dogs are my favourite characters in this film, its a beautiful little story mixed with comedy and dogs, whats not to like?

12. Flight of the reindeer (2000) Also known as The Christmas Secret.
This is a TV Christmas film, it is very hard to find a trailer or even a DVD for this film. This Christmas Film is about a scientist, who saw a reindeer fly when he was younger and has made it his mission to find out the truth of whether reindeer can fly. After an aeroplane accident, this man finds himself at the heart of the north pole and discovers that all the stories are true. He now has a decision to make, to reveal the truth to the world or keep this long kept secret?

11. The Greatest Store in The World (1999)
This film may not be as well known as the others, The Greatest Store in the World is a BBC Christmas film. DVDs of this Christmas tale are very hard to find, even a trailer for the film is hard to come by (below is the introduction). The story is about Geraldine and her two daughters (Livvie and Angeline), they find themselves homeless at Christmas time and they set up residency at the Scottleys Department store in London. They have to keep their new home a secret from the security guards, Door Man (Hugh Laurie) and a couple of thieves who plan on robbing the best department store in London. The film includes scenes with pop-band S-CLub 7 and other well-known celebrities.
If anyone knows where I can get a copy of this film from please let me know in the comments. Thank you.

10. The Holiday (2006)
I did the one thing that you should never do with a film, I overwatched it and unfortunately, It lost some of its appeal which is the reason it is so low on my list. This story follows two women who decide to House swap after some heartbreak. Over the festive period, they take a little while to adjust to each other's lifestyles from an L.A mansion, to a quaint cottage in the Surrey countryside. They both go on a path of self-discovery and new love, this is a film you can watch with a glass of wine or cosied up with hot chocolate and blanket.

9. Last Holiday (2006)
This isn't really a Christmas film in my books but I do love to watch it in the winter especially around Christmas. You have probably heard the question:"If it was your last day on earth what would you do?", Well, once she's told she only has 3 weeks to live Georgia Burts (Queen Latifa) decides to live every moment to the fullest. From supermarket coupons and a modest shy life to a full-blown expensive extravaganza, 5-star hotel, and Michelin star food. Georgia's infecting everyone around her with her fabulous personality. For a feel-good film that encourages you to do something out of your norm, this is the film for you this winter.

8. Love Actually (2003)
At Christmas, this film is actually all around us. As soon as December first hits our calendars we cannot escape, trailers quotes and memes of this Christmas rom-com.Unfortunately being swamped by this film and it's promo every year has taken away part of the joy of this film. I agree completely that it's a classic, it's hilarious, beautiful and at some times tragic. It's everything you'd want in an adult Christmas movie. The reason it is so low on this list is that it's always around, and overplayed and overwatched, maybe it's best to set a notchback on love actually fever?

7. Die Hard (1988)
This is a Christmas film and I will not listen to anyone that says otherwise. This is a Christmas film for people who don't really like Christmas films (or indeed those who do) and want a little more action, guns, explosions, and muscles. When terrorists take over his wife's office Christmas party, John McClane (Bruce Willis) becomes their worst nightmare, helping to evacuate the building and to out-maneuver the terrorists. Will he make it? Well, there have been 5 Die Hard films so far, so there's a good chance he might. Does it deserve to go before 'Love Actually'? Yes, actually it does.

6. Dr.Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
This Dr. Seuss classic is brought to life with a star-studded cast. Growing up I was a big Dr. Seuss fan, Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, you name it I had either heard it or read it.  You can imagine my joy and excitement when 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' hit the screens. I still love this film today, the story of an individual who gets marginalised and bullied for being different. As the title suggests the Grinch steals Christmas, but will he have the heart to give it back?

5. Jack Frost (1998)
Jack Frost is one of the most magical films I have ever seen if you've never seen this film before be sure to watch it this December. Watching the trailer below might put my words into better perspective but the film is about a little boy, who after the losing his father befriends a magical snowman who turns out to be his fathers' reincarnation. This film is a hilarious heart-warming Christmas adventure that helps a young boy grieve his father, this film is a tear jerker so keep the tissues at the ready.

4. The Polar Express (2004)
If you're a Tom Hanks fan and haven't seen this film, where have you been? Mr. Hanks voices 6 of the characters in this film, so go on, hurry up and watch it. This movie has won a bunch of awards, I could list them, but I'm lazy, so I won't. The animation is unlike anything else I have ever seen. The story is based on a book about a boy who starts to not believe, in Santa, and magic. The kid is growing up and it's his chance to hop on the mysterious train that stopped on tracks right outside his home. I don't know If I'd call it a musical, there are quite a few songs, but I wouldn't let that stop you from watching this spectacular, visually pleasing Christmas film, that will have you believing in Christmas Magic.

3. Home Alone (1990)
If you have not seen this film stop whatever you are doing (including reading this blog post) and watch it. This is a Christmas Classic, the story of the McCallister family who goes on Vacation to Paris over the Christmas Holidays. There's only one problem, they forgot Kevin, yup, they actually forgot a child. Not only does poor little Kevin think he's wished his family away, he also has to fend off two burglars who wish to rob his home. I can only hope I would as good as this kid in this situation, his creative and clever ideas to keep the burglars at bay will have you laughing in no time. This is a must-watch!

2. Arthur Christmas (2011)
My Modern day favourite Christmas film, hands down has to be Arthur Christmas. Sure this may not be for everyone, whilst the animation may be considered a children's film, for me it is not. I am guilty of watching Arthur Christmas multiple times every year (I have already seen it twice this December).  This film is there for anyone who loves Christmas and is surrounded by non-believers of the adult world. Whilst everyone's motivation is selfish or target is driven in the North Pole, Arthur, (whose job it is to reply to all the children's letters to Santa) is the only one to step up and do the right thing when a child 'Gwen' has been missed and will wake up present-less on Christmas morning. This film brings the good old spirit, magic, and tradition of Christmas back to life in a modern way.

1. The Santa Clause (1994)
Maybe it's because I have watched it every year without fail, maybe it's because it's another Disney gem or just because it is a brilliant stand-alone film (I am not counting number 2 or 3)! The Santa Clause has been my number one favorite film since I can remember. This story is a classic, Charlie Calvin (Eric Lloyd) is stuck in the middle of a divorce: his mum settling down a with a new man and his father Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) finding a new career as Santa Claus, which as you can imagine ruffles a few feathers with the non-believers. "Just because who can't see something doesn't mean it isn't real"; the films encompasses everything that is everything about Christmas and I cannot wait to get snug on the sofa and watch this film with my family on Christmas eve.

So there you have it my 13 favourite films to watch at Christmas time. Did you guess correctly?? 100 festive points if you did! What's Your favourite Christmas film?  Are there any films in my top 13 that you think should/not be there? Let me know in the Comments. I feel ever so festive after writing this and watching all the trailers and indeed a few of these films all over again.
