The Winter Solstice | Blogmas 2017

Today is the Winter Solstice.

"What's the Winter Solstice?" I hear you ask. Well, the Winter Solstice is an event that happens once a year, when the North Pole is tilted the furthest away from the sun. This also means that the day of the Winter solstice is the shortest day of the year. The Sun rose at around 8 am this morning and is expected to set between 15:54pm (3:54pm) 16:28pm (4:28pm) this evening, depending on your geographical location within the UK. We will get around 8 to 9 hours of sun on the day of the Winter Solstice. Depending on how close you live to the North Pole, the less sunlight you will get.

The Winter Solstice is usually associated with the start of winter and a drop in temperatures. However this year we have already seen temperatures below 0°C and even snow. (Did anyone else not get any snow? I felt like I was the only one in the UK!?) This means that temperatures will continue to stay low and decrease even further in January and February, so there is a chance we could see more snow in the New Year.

There is some positive news, with the Winter Solstice being the shortest day, this means the days can only get longer. Before you know it the evenings will be filled with sunlight once again. Alright, it might take a few months before we see the sunset a bit later on, but we're on our way there, hello summer!!

I hope you found this a little interesting and made you a little happier knowing those dark morning and evenings getting to and from work will soon be filled with daylight.
