Let's Talk About Jameela Jamil and the I weigh movement

So, Woman Crush Wednesday has been around for a while now, if you haven't heard of it, What are you waiting for? search the hashtag #womancrushwednesday or #wcw for short. I'm all for anything that celebrates women, especially other women who do so. I always find myself talking about female role models and the awareness, challenge, campaign or company for or founded by women with my friends. So I've decided to lead by example, and dedicate Wednesday Blog Posts to Women and all their greatness.

This Wednesday; Let's Talk About Jameela Jamil and The I weigh movement!

Instagram @i_weigh

(Caution self-plugging ahead) If you follow me on Instagram -link in the sidebar @thebashstyle - (I did warn you), you will have already seen my love and appreciation for Jameela and her ever-flowing wavy hair. Jameela Jamil is a writer, journalist, model, DJ, radio host, actress, and TV presenter, and was discovered whilst teaching English. Many of you may recognise Jameela from good old T4 on channel 4, or more recently playing Tahani Al'Jamil in 'The Good Place' on Netflix.

Jameela got angry at an Instagram account when they posted a picture stating the weight in kg of the Kardashian/Jenner women (see pic above). I'll be honest It's the worst weight associating pic that I have seen in a while. My Insta feed is usually full of Girl Boss' and female empowerement, not petty posts on the weight of celebrities (this is also the reason I stopped buying magazines). Let's face it, there really isn't any need for a picture or post like that and Jameela certainly wasn't having any of it. I was applauding in agreement with her colourful language, calling out the unnecessary photo and display of weight in Kg. My love for Jameela and her no-nonsense attitude increased just a little bit more.
I wish that I could double tap on people's Insta stories because there really are some fabulous posts, tips, advice and content. (can we make this a feature please Instagram?)

Jameela then responded to these ridiculous images with the following (see pic above): a picture of herself with all the aspects of her life she loves and values, with a little speech on how we shouldn't value KG but value the other building blocks in our life that make us who we are (cue another applause in agreement with Jameela). To Jameela's surprise, she was sent and tagged in numerous Instagram posts and Instagram stories, from women from all over (including myself) stating the building blocks of their life that they love and appreciate and made them, them. Within 24 hours of her initial post, #Iweigh was born and had started taking on a lease of life that Jameela had no idea would happen.

Jameela's Instagram Stories continued to display the self-love posts women were sending her based on the #Iweigh movement. After a week or two Jameela had set up an Instagram account (@I_weigh). I followed the account without even second guessing and you should too. The account is full of the #Iweigh posts that women have sent Jameela and it is the most beautiful display of self-love and empowerement I have ever seen. Men and Women of all shapes and sizes taking back the narrative from the media and embrassing their bodies, their life and oozing confidence on a phenomenal scale.
It's beautiful to open my insta app and be presented with people who are proud of their bodies and their lives, this account (@i_weigh) makes me smile everyday.

Jameela has been open and honest with her own weight struggles, she has applauded anyone who has sent her a picture and is grateful to everyone and anyone showing support and posting. Jameela is on a mission to help people feel better about themselves, their figures, body, weight and life. She has managed to create a community of empowerement and positivity. She has sent a message to the world: You are more than just your KG, and shouldn't value your selfworth based on whether you conform to the medias standards, in beauty, fashion and weight, and the world has listened.
