Let's Talk About Lilly Singh and Spread Girl Love
Woman Crush Wednesday has been around for a while now if you haven't heard of it, What are you waiting for? search the hashtag #womancrushwednesday or #wcw for short. I'm all for anything that celebrates women, especially other women who do so. I always find myself talking about female role models and the awareness, challenge, campaign or company for or founded by women with my friends. So I've decided to lead by example, and dedicate Wednesday Blog Posts to Women and all their greatness.
This Wednesday Let's talk about Lilly Singh and Spread Girl Love!
Lily Singh is a Candian Comedian, Youtube creator, Entrepreneur, and Bawse. In the year 2015 Singh released a video (with the help of a few of her friends, you may spot some familiar faces) explaining that she has created a campaign to stop the girl-on-girl hate and create and spread girl love.
"Girl-on-girl hate is such a huge issue in schools, at the workplace and/or online. It's about time we got rid of this lame trend and came together to build women up. Watch the video and tag all your female friends in the #GirlLove challenge! Simple post a compliment towards another woman on social media using the hashtag #GirlLove. All revenue from this video will be donated to the Malala Fund in support of educating girls around the world. " Lilly Singh.
The challenge that Lilly Singh had started was simple, post a comment, status or picture, then compliment and tag someone that inspires you, a friend, a family member, anyone you know and use the # #girllove. Post on social media complimenting or supporting someone, how simple is that? It's something that most of us have done or received before, and it does make you feel a little happier and spread some positivity.
Every dollar made from the views on the video were donated to the Malala Fund (an incredible organization that helps girl's education across the world). After 30 Days a Donation of $4000 was made to the Malala Fund.
"Although the 30 day donation period has come to an end, #GirlLove is a challenge that we must continue to take every single day. I can’t wait to keep building this initiative and making it bigger and better every year!" Lilly Singh.
Lilly has continued to Spread #GirlLove ever since, the evidence is clear to see, just look up @spreadgirllove on Instagram or Twitter and you will see the contact output of positivity and support for other women. Since the Social media movement success, Lily has taken her campaign a step further, by creating her own fundraising campaign for girl's education.
Singh partnered with We Charity, under the Me to WE program, a social enterprise that enables and empowers villages and sustainable living. The We Charity was created by 12-year-old Craig, his brother, and some classmates, with the aim of freeing child slaves. After realising that freeing child slaves was not enough, and seeing that families were struggling to support and feed themselves they expanded their focus, and Free The Children's WE Villages were born. The WE Villages are based on 5 Key Pillars Education, Clean Water and sanitation, health care, food security and alternative income. 90% of all profits go back into developing and improving the sustainability of the communities.
Lilly has been dedicated to helping to improve the lives of young girls and women within the WE Villages, in collaboration with the Girl Love ME to WE program. Lilly (with the Girl Love campaign) has designed Rafiki bracelets and gifts, the bracelets are created by the women within the WE Villages, the Rafiki Bracelets are available to purchase on the ME to WE online store. The Video below is Lilly's Vlog of her Time in Kenya, the creation of the Rafiki bracelets and the impact her contribution and collaboration has created.
