September Favourites
September, despite not going 'back to school' anymore, September still feels like a time for new beginnings, shedding old skin, productivity and motivation. Also marks the beginning of the cosy autumn season, there's no season I love more than Autumn.
The Power by Naom Alderman
I was late on the bandwagon with this one, not only is it already a best-seller but also won the Bailey's Women's Prize for Fiction (2017). I'm not a fast reader, It can take me weeks/months to finish a book especially when there's a smaller font on the page, yet I still found myself whizzing through over half this book in one afternoon. If that doesn't show you how good this is I don't know what will. The story is told through the lives of 4/5 individuals showing different perspectives of 'the day of the girls' and how societies develop after young girls found out they have developed an electrostatic power. Women now have power, more than we know in our daily society, and Men start to lose control, dominance and influence. It's a page-turning thriller I think everyone should read. I'd be surprised if we do not see a film in the not too distant future.
Davines Hair Wax
If you follow me on Instagram (@thebashleyy) you will have seen that I got my hair cut into a pixie cut for a 100 Days Without Anxiety Challenge. I've never had hair this short and I was worried about styling it in the morning and after a wash. I picked up this Davines Hair wax at the hairdressers after I got the chop (aka after walking out the hairdressers I had to run back in and then buy it.). Not only is this product cruelty-free and minimal waste packaging it smells divine!! I use a little lump of this product all over my hands and then work it through my hair. I've never had to reapply it, lasts all day and doesn't go weird in the rain, I don't know what more you could ask for really? If you have short hair I'd definitely recommend using this product and if you don't, why not browse through the rest of their products.
Discovery of Witches
This is not your usual fantasy show, if you're thinking it's along the same lines as vampire diaries, teen wolf, (or even twilight, bless you) think again. Set in the academic city of Oxford, we follow the story of a young alchemical professor, she's also a witch who we discover has refused to associate with most other witches and abandoned her powers after the death (murder) of her parents. After some spooky shenanigans occur with a book (alchemy manuscript Ashmole 782) she takes out of the library, a tall, dark and handsome stranger, Dr Mathew de Clairemont, a geneticist and very old (I've tried to find his age but have no idea, please comment or message if you do) vampire, essentially starts talking her. He takes a protective role over Diana early on, he appears to not just be after the manuscript but actually caring about her wellbeing, which I can only assume will lead to some sort of romantic relationship. The show is aired weekly on SKY 1, if you have access to this channel I'd recommend giving the show a go, it's a little slow in places but you'll be gripped by the end of the episode, wanting to know more.
Harry Potter, and the Wizarding World
I don't know many people who aren't Potter fans and I must admit I'm Potter mad, I loved the books, adored the films and enjoy any pass-time that involves any part of the wizarding world. Whilst I have a never-ending love of Potter, it heightens at particular moments of the year, a new book, a new film, new merch or going to an exhibition, show, or the warner brothers studio tour (I'm not mentioning 'The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Universal Studios', because I've never been, please feel free to take me there.). This month I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to go to the Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio Tour in Watford. It's changed since last we went, I loved the new exhibits, the forbidden forest and the Hogwarts Express were impressive. The magic has been restored and I feel like a kid discovering the books for the first time all over again, it feels like going home after a long time away.
BBC Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park
The Festival in a day was brilliant, with a line up featuring Lenny Kravitz, Rita Ora, All Saints, Boyzone, Kylie and more. A chilled atmosphere and friendly vibe, most people brought a blanket or deck chair to sit in whilst listening to the acts play, there was also a standing area near the front of the stage for anyone who wanted to party. The amenities and facilities catered for most people, there were lots of food stalls selling everything from a hog roast to vegan meals, (you were also allowed to bring your own food), Bars, water refill stations and toilets near every entrance/exit. We had so much fun there, the sun was shining, the food was delicious, the music was a perfect mix of old and new, there was something there for everyone.
What have you been enjoying recently? Have you tried any of the things I've mentioned? If yes, How was your experience?
