January Bookshelf

Over the years I've built up my bookshelves very slowly, in the past, I may have only read one, two or at a push three books a year. I struggled a little with reading when I was younger and haltered my progress when I started comparing myself to others and their reading speed. As soon as I stopped comparing myself to others and racing to finish a book first, I fell in love with reading all over again. So I've decided to update you on the lands I travel to, the characters I meet and my opinion on them. As I said before I'm not the fastest reader so don't expect a book list as long as my arm every month.

A Game of Thrones
by George R.R. Martin
Watch the series? Yeah me too. I got the first book in the series as a Christmas present. I'm a big fan of the TV series and I loved going back to the beginning and revisiting some of my favourite characters. I felt like the show was a brilliant adaptation of the book, they represented most things described in the book but there were a few missed details, characters or little easter eggs which made more sense when reading and gave the story a little more depth. It's worth a read, it took me a little longer than expected but nearly 800 pages in less than a month is pretty good for me.
If you haven't seen the show, I'd recommend the book too, but unlike other films or show, I don't think you need to read the book first. If anything having watched the show helped me to remember, who the characters were when reading. The story set in a foreign land which was once home to mystical creatures such as dragons, children of the forest and "the others". The story opens with the king Robert Baratheon requiring a new hand (aka right-hand man), it mainly follows the stories of the king's family, the Stark family (the new hand) and the exiled children from the previous king. If you like a period/fantasy storyline with lots of twists turns and unexpected truths, this is the book for you.

Widows
by Lynda La Plante
I have to admit I'm only a few chapters in when typing up this blog post but so far I'm enjoying the storyline. The book is the basis for "Widows" which is the major motion picture starring Viola Davis and Michelle Rodriguez. The book is set in the '80s, where three Widows (whose husbands blew up in a robbery gone wrong) come to terms with their losses by planning to undertake the heist that their husbands didn't get to complete. With the police surveilling them and other gangsters wanting their husbands' old turf and ledgers, I'm excited to see if and how Dolly, Shirley and Linda come together and pull off the job. I'll let you know how I get on with "the heist thriller of 2018" next month.

What have you been reading this month? Do you have a book you would like to suggest for next month? Please get in touch or comment any recommendations.
Thanks for reading
